SPRINGFIELD, IL — I want to thank the principled state senators of both parties who put the needs of their constituents ahead of political risks today. This followed equally courageous votes by members of both parties in the State House of Representatives in recent days.
The package on Governor Rauner’s desk contains much of what he asked for at the tax rate he specified. It is an imperfect bipartisan political compromise. It cuts $3 billion from the state budget. It helps us begin the long process of digging ourselves out of the last two years of fiscal lawlessness in which our backlog of unpaid bills tripled to more than $15 billion. The only fiscally conservative and responsible course is for Governor Rauner to sign it.
