A Statewide Pet Adoption Event on Veteran’s Day
CHICAGO—Today at PAWS Chicago, Comptroller Mendoza announced her “Pets for Vets” all-day, statewide pet adoption event to be held on Veteran’s Day, Saturday, November 11th, 2017. On this day, any veteran that walks into one of the designated shelters around the state and adopts a cat and/or dog will have the adoption fee waived thanks to the generosity of the participating sponsors.
“What’s great about this event is that we’re finding loving homes for animals in our state’s shelters and that is helping our veterans,” Mendoza said. “When we don’t have as many animals in our shelters, it also helps our state’s bottom line. It’s a win all across the board.”
Comptroller Mendoza has a long history of championing animal welfare. As Chicago City Clerk, Mendoza took on the horrendous puppy mill industry and won. Working closely with animal rights groups, primarily the Puppy Mill Project, Clerk Mendoza spearheaded and passed the Companion Animal and Consumer Protection Ordinance, banning Chicago Pet Stores from selling dogs, cats or rabbits unless those animals are sourced from humane shelters or animal rescue organizations. Now as Comptroller, she is continuing the late Judy Baar Topinka’s Comptroller’s Critters Program, helping to find sheltered animals homes.
This event is made possible by the following sponsors: Fifth Third Bank, Ariel Investments, Bentley’s Pet Stuff, Blue Dog Bakery, Bourbon on Division, Choose Chicago, SP+, State Farm, Testa Produce Inc, The John Buck Company Foundation, Tradition Gastro Pub and Bar.
About: Comptroller’s Critters was designed to help people locate pet adoption shelters throughout Illinois. Our goal is to give people the resources they need to adopt a pet and ultimately reduce animal control costs at a state and local level. The Office has partnered with shelters throughout Illinois to help reduce the number of animals waiting to be adopted.
