Fiscal Year 16 came to a close on June 30 without a budget, and the stalemate has had an effect on Illinois’ backlog of unpaid bills in a major way. The charts below detail just how much the backlog increased throughout the year.
Over the course of FY16 Illinois backlog of unpaid bills increased by more than $3.5 billion. The dip through March and April reflect tax season that allow the Comptroller’s Office to pay down bills more quickly, but it rose again by the end of the fiscal year.
