SPRINGFIELD — Illinois Comptroller Susana A. Mendoza has released the following statement regarding the shootings of police officers in Kankakee County Wednesday night. Bradley Police Department Sergeant Marlene Rittmanic died as a result of injuries while another officer was left in critical condition. Yesterday, in a separate incident, Wayne County Sheriff’s Deputy Sean Riley was killed on duty. A statement from yesterday on that from Comptroller Mendoza is at this link.
The statement from today is as follows:
“The news of two police officers being shot in Kankakee County while on duty late Wednesday is heartbreaking. My prayers go out to the family of Sergeant Marlene Rittmanic, killed in the line of duty. My family and I will be praying for the other officer who remains in critical condition. Once again, Illinoisans are mourning the tragic death of an officer harmed while performing their critical public-service role. These officers made the ultimate sacrifice in the effort to protect and serve their communities. I ask my fellow Illinoisans to keep the families and colleagues of all of these heroic officers in your prayers.”
