CHICAGO—This Independence Day gave legislators under the governor’s regime a chance to declare their independence from a governor who is a Party of One, and gave legislators of both parties a chance to show that they are willing to compromise to put the needs of the whole state ahead of political interests. I ask members of the House of Representatives to stand firm and override Governor Rauner’s irresponsible veto of the budget as their Senate counterparts did today.
I want to thank the principled state senators of both parties who put the needs of their constituents ahead of political risks today. This followed equally courageous votes by members of both parties in the State House of Representatives in recent days.
I want to thank all the members of the Illinois House of Representatives who courageously voted to step back from the fiscal disaster of the last two years and to take back their constitutional power of appropriation. In particular I want to thank the 15 Republican profiles in courage who were true heroes today, standing up for the people of Illinois and not for a Party of One
