Comptroller Mendoza urges Governor to refinance state debt
CHICAGO – Two months ago today, the General Assembly authorized Governor Bruce Rauner to refinance a portion of Illinois’ $15.4 billion bill backlog.
CHICAGO — As the daughter of Mexican immigrants and a proud natural born citizen of the United States of America, I stand with the DREAMers and I call on President Trump and members of Congress to affirm that America is still lifting the lamp beside the golden door and not punishing good people for the actions of their parents. America is not just a country; it is the greatest idea ever created. A place where dreams can become reality given hard work and some luck along the way. DREAMers represent the best among us; valedictorians and honor roll students; future doctors, lawyers, and teachers; and veterans who have risked their lives for their country which they call the United States of America. The reason that nearly a million people in America came out of the shadows and registered under DACA was because of a promise by the American government not to target them for deportation. To violate that contract now with productive members of American society would be to turn our backs on the principles of fairness that make this country great. I urge Congress to immediately get to work on correcting this wrong.
Cutler, IL —I thank legislators in both Houses from both parties for coming together to pass this historic bill to put school funding on a long-overdue path to equity in Illinois. Educators and most importantly parents and children everywhere in Illinois can finally exhale and have confidence that their schools will open and stay open. I have prepared my Office to release an estimated $540 million in General State Aid owed to schools for the month of August as soon as the Governor signs the bill and after the State Board of Education transmits these vouchers to my Office. It is anticipated these payments will be issued within the next few days. My best wishes to all Illinois school children for a safe and productive school year.
